Volcano Circuit & Zwift KOM

Thursday, Nov 26th at 6:30PM & 7:20PM

The Event: The first meet-up, the Royal City Rumble @ 6:30PM, will feature intervals of Watopia's "Volcano Circuit" route. At 4.1km per lap be prepared for VO2 max intensity efforts. Our second meet-up, the RC After Party @7:20PM, is a Heats & Finals style showdown. The top finishers from each semi-final will square off in the "A" Final while the remainder of our riders can seek redemption in the "B" Final.

The Royal City Rumble: This week's edition will be 5 Laps of Watopia's "Volcano Circuit" (= 21.9km, including lead in). We'll begin with 1.4km Neutral Start (see below) to the Black Lap Banner (= start of the Lap). At that point we'll ramp-up the intensity for a hard 4.1km lap finishing back at the Black Lap Banner. Then we'll ride the next complete lap very easy to regroup. We'll alternate Hard/Easy for 5 total laps (completing 3 Hard). As always, all abilities can join just be prepared to go hard!

I've done some recon for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:

Route: Watopia's "Volcano Circuit" https://zwiftinsider.com/watopia/

Neutral Start: 1.4km* The Neutral Meet-Up Start is VERY different than Zwift races. There is no start "corral" like in Zwift races. When the Meet-Up begins we group-up from the back:

  • If you're avatar spawned behind the ride leader (Kyle; identified with the yellow arrow) pedal a bit harder to catch up.

  • If you're avatar spawned ahead of the ride leader you should be coasting or riding at <75W until the ride leader passes you.

  • Mistake: Don't try to catch up with the first rider on the road. That will pull other riders up ahead and create gaps. Pedal as needed to get into the "Ride Leader Group" and the group will pick up all riders in the Meet-Up as we head towards the Start.

Stick with the ride leader and we'll ride easy to the Black Lap Start Banner. At that point it's time to drop the hammer. Unlike IRL bike racing we will actually ride easy (<100 Watts) for the neutral start.

Lap Start/Finish: Black Banner @1.4km, 5.5km, 9.6km, 13.7km, 17.8km. A complete lap = 4.1km. Alternating Hard/Easy. This is a challenging circuit with rolling terrain.

Sprint: Use the Dashboard Display to see the "distance remaining" (grey, bottom left of display) to complete the lap and judge your sprint.

End of Meet-Up: Blue Banner @21.9km. On the 5th and final lap use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from the lap finish (= Black Banner).

*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road. For a fair start we begin with a neutral roll-out and group up from the back. So, please make sure to stick with the ride leader (me) until we reach the Lap Start/Finish (= Black Banner).

The RC After Party: Riders will be divided into "semi-final" heats that will run simultaneously starting at 7:20PM. Subsequently, everyone is invited to join the "final" meet-up starting @7:35PM. The final will go ahead with an "A" group leaving at time = 0:00 and a "B" group leaving at time = +2:00. The top finishers (exact # TBD) from each semi-final will leave with the "A" group and everyone else will leave in the "B" group.

Instructions for the number of riders advancing to the "A" final will appear when you join semi-final meet-up (look for the yellow message to the right of your screen). Semi-final results will show on your screen at the end of the meet-up. Be sure to check your finish placing and group yourself accordingly for the final.

The semi-final and final will use the same route = 2.7km of Watopia's "Hilly Route". The course begins downhill and flat but the finish will come very close to the top of the Zwift KOM. This meet-up will be tactical! Power to weight (w/kg) will be key on the climb but a fast finish will punch your ticket to the "A" final. A well timed Power-Up could give you a significant advantage.

Route details for Watopia's "Hilly Route" are on Zwift Insider here: https://zwiftinsider.com/watopia/

I've recon'd the course for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:

Start: at Km = 0 (No Neutral)

Zwift KOM: (0.9km, @5%) Beginning at 1.7km Finish: Blue Meet-Up Banner at 2.7km*. Use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from Red KOM Finish Banner of the Zwift KOM.

*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road.

A few reminders so that things go smoothly:

  • Power Ups are fair game!

  • No TT Bikes. If you need to change bikes you can do so in the game by going into your garage and selecting a road bike.

  • Get your warm-up/activation done before the meet-up.

  • Results will show up when you cross the finish and available when viewing your activity in the Companion App.
