Innsbruck Sprints & KOM

Thursday, Jan 21st at 6:30PM & 7:30PM

The Event: Intended to be a two-part recon for Tuesday's Zwift Racing League Race #3. The first meet-up, the Royal City Rumble @ 6:30PM, will feature three tours of the Innsbruck city center with targeted efforts of the Innsbruck Sprint. Our second meet-up, the RC After Party @7:30PM, will be an Aussie pursuit-style event that tackles the Category 2 climb to the finish of the Innsbruck KOM.

The Royal City Rumble:

Route details for Innsbruck's "Innsbruckring" are on Zwift Insider here: https://zwiftinsider.com/innsbruck/

I've recon'd the course for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:

Neutral Start: 5.4km* The Neutral Meet-Up Start is VERY different than Zwift races. There is no start "corral" like in Zwift races. When the Meet-Up begins we group-up from the back:

  • If you're avatar spawned behind the ride leader (Kyle; identified with the yellow arrow) pedal a bit harder to catch up.

  • If you're avatar spawned ahead of the ride leader you should be coasting or riding at <75W until the ride leader passes you.

  • Mistake: Don't try to catch up with the first rider on the road. That will pull other riders up ahead and create gaps. Pedal as needed to get into the "Ride Leader Group" and the group will pick up all riders in the Meet-Up as we head towards the Start.

Stick with the ride leader and we'll ride easy to the beginning of the first effort. At that point it's time to drop the hammer. Unlike IRL bike racing we will actually ride easy for the neutral start.

Interval Start: (2.1km) Beginning at 5.4, 14.4, 23.4km* Interval begins with a short steep pitch (0.4km @7.5%) followed immediately by a quick descent. The remaining run-in to the finish at the Innsbruck Sprint is mostly flat. Interval Finish: (2.1km) Efforts #1 & 2 Ending at 7.5, 16.5* The first two efforts will finish at the Green Innsbruck Sprint Finish Banner. We'll regroup afterwards. The third and final effort will finish at the Meet-Up Finish.

Meet-up Finish: Blue Meet-Up Banner at 25.5km. Use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from Innsbruck Sprint Green Finish Banner.

*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road.

The RC After Party:

Once again, points are up for grabs in our Points Classification Contest. For Aussie Pursuit-style meet-ups you earn points for your place of finish and finishing time.

An Australian Pursuit begins with a staggered start. Riders go off at different time intervals (usually strongest last) and the objective is to place well and ride a fast time. Riders at different points along the road can work together (or not) to gain an advantage on competitors. Riders will go off in four wave starts. Waves are self selected but a good rule of thumb is to follow the Zwift rider (A,B,C,D) classification:

Zwift rider classifications are based on relative ability level (using Functional Threshold Power = FTP). Take a look here for more info: https://zwift.com/news/4310-zwift-how-to-prepare-for-your-first-race-or-group-ride Wave Start #, (Suggested Rider Classification), Time Gap  Wave 1 (D) @ +0:00  Wave 2 (C) @ +1:30  Wave 3 (B) @ +3:00  Wave 4 (A) @ +4:00

So, when you're in the start area don't start pedaling until your wave start time!

It's also a good idea to pace yourself off the start rather than blasting it right out the gate. This will benefit you and all the riders in your group. A group that comes together quickly and works well together will be the fastest moving riders on the road.

Tip: Use the green rider displays on the right side of the screen to see who's around you, time gaps and how hard those riders are pedaling.

See pics (below) and use this info to create your stem guides:

Start: Wave Start. See above for self selected wave guidelines.

Route: We leave the city center and head directly to the Innsbruck KOM (7.4km @6%). The KOM officially begins at 3.6km. Finish: Blue Meet-Up Banner at 11.3km. Use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from the Red Innsbruck KOM Finish Banner.

*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road.

A few reminders so that things go smoothly:

  • Power Ups are fair game!

  • No TT Bikes. If you need to change bikes you can do so in the game by going into your garage and selecting a road bike.

  • Get your warm-up/activation done before the meet-up.

  • Results will show up when you cross the finish and available when viewing your activity in the Companion App.
