Thursday, Dec 3rd at 6:30PM & 7:20PM
The Event: The first meet-up, the Royal City Rumble @ 6:30PM, will feature select efforts on Yorkshire's 2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit. Our second meet-up, the RC After Party @7:30PM, is an Australian Pursuit style showdown that will highlight the technical run-in to the finish of the 2019 UCI Worlds Circuit.
The Royal City Rumble: This week's edition will be 1 and 1/2 Laps of Yorkshire's "2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit" (= 25.6km, including lead in). We'll roll-out together as a group to the start of the Yorkshire KOM. At that point we'll begin the first of two hard efforts. Both efforts conclude at the Yorkshire Sprint. After the first effort we'll regroup and ride easy back to the beginning of the Yorkshire KOM for the start of our second hard effort. The second hard effort finishes at the end of the meet-up (at approximately the finish of the Yorkshire Sprint). As always, all abilities can join just be prepared to go hard!
I've done some recon for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:
Route: Yorkshire's "2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit" https://zwiftinsider.com/yorkshire/
Neutral Start: 8.1km* The Neutral Meet-Up Start is VERY different than Zwift races. There is no start "corral" like in Zwift races. When the Meet-Up begins we group-up from the back:
If you're avatar spawned behind the ride leader (Kyle; identified with the yellow arrow) pedal a bit harder to catch up.
If you're avatar spawned ahead of the ride leader you should be coasting or riding at <75W until the ride leader passes you.
Mistake: Don't try to catch up with the first rider on the road. That will pull other riders up ahead and create gaps. Pedal as needed to get into the "Ride Leader Group" and the group will pick up all riders in the Meet-Up as we head towards the Start.
Stick with the ride leader and we'll ride easy to the beginning of the Yorkshire KOM. At that point it's time to drop the hammer. Unlike IRL bike racing we will actually ride easy for the neutral start.
Effort #1&2: (3.5km) Begins at 8.1km & 22.1km*.
This is a "combo" effort that begins at the Yorkshire KOM (1.2km @5.5%) and finishes at the Green Yorkshire Sprint Banner (250m). Ends at 11.6km* & 25.6km*.
End of Meet-Up: Blue Banner at 25.6km. On Effort #2 use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from the Sprint finish (= Green Banner).
*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road. For a fair start we begin with a neutral roll-out and group up from the back. So, please make sure to stick with the ride leader (me) until we reach the start of the Yorkshire KOM.
The RC After Party: An Australian Pursuit begins with a staggered start. Riders go off at different time intervals (usually strongest last) but the objective remains the same: first to cross the finish line wins. Riders at different points along the road can work together (or not) to gain an advantage on competitors. Riders will go off in four wave starts. Waves are self selected but a good rule of thumb is to follow the Zwift rider (A,B,C,D) classification:
Zwift rider classifications are based on relative ability level (using Functional Threshold Power = FTP). Take a look here for more info: https://zwift.com/news/4310-zwift-how-to-prepare-for-your-first-race-or-group-ride Wave Start #, (Suggested Rider Classification), Time Gap Wave 1 (D) @ +0:00 Wave 2 (C) @ +0:20 Wave 3 (B) @ +0:40 Wave 4 (A) @ +1:00
So, when you're in the start area don't start pedaling until your wave start time!
It's also a good idea to pace yourself off the start rather than blasting it right out the gate. This will benefit you and all the riders in your group. A group that comes together quickly and works well together will be the fastest moving riders on the road.
Tip: Use the green rider displays on the right side of the screen to see who's around you, time gaps and how hard those riders are pedaling.
Route details for Yorkshire's "Royal Pump Room 8" are on Zwift Insider here: https://zwiftinsider.com/yorkshire/
I've recon'd the course for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:
Start: at Km = 0 (No Neutral)
Route: "Lumpy" 4.7km. We'll begin riding backwards on the UCI Worlds course for the first ~3.5km but loop back to traverse the final ~1km of the UCI Worlds course. This will allow us the preview the difficult finish stretch. Finish: Blue Meet-Up Banner at 4.7km*. Use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from UCI Worlds Finish Banner.
*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road.
A few reminders so that things go smoothly:
Power Ups are fair game!
No TT Bikes. If you need to change bikes you can do so in the game by going into your garage and selecting a road bike.
Get your warm-up/activation done before the meet-up.
Results will show up when you cross the finish and available when viewing your activity in the Companion App.
