Fan Flats & Libby Hill

Thursday, Feb 18th at 6:30PM & 7:30PM

The Event: The first meet-up, the Royal City Rumble @ 6:30PM, will feature alternating hard / easy laps of Richmond's "The Fan Flats". Our second meet-up, the RC After Party @7:30PM, will preview the finish of the upcoming Zwift Racing League event finishing on the Libby Hill KOM used in the Richmond 2015 UCI World Champs. The RC After Party is a Rouleur Level Members only event.

The Royal City Rumble: We'll complete 5 and 1/2 laps of Richmond's "The Fan Flats" (= 23.0km, including lead in). We'll roll-out together as a group for the first 2.5km to the Green Lap Banner (= start of the Lap). At that point we'll ramp-up the intensity for a hard 5.1km lap finishing back at the Green Lap Banner. Then we'll ride the next complete lap very easy to regroup. We'll alternate Hard/Easy for 5 total laps (completing 3 Hard). As always, all abilities can join just be prepared to go hard!

I've done some recon for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:

Route: Richmond's "The Fan Flats" https://zwiftinsider.com/richmond/

Neutral Start: 2.5km* The Neutral Meet-Up Start is VERY different than Zwift races. There is no start "corral" like in Zwift races. When the Meet-Up begins we group-up from the back:

  • If you're avatar spawned behind the ride leader (Kyle; identified with the yellow arrow) pedal a bit harder to catch up.

  • If you're avatar spawned ahead of the ride leader you should be coasting or riding at <75W until the ride leader passes you.

  • Mistake: Don't try to catch up with the first rider on the road. That will pull other riders up ahead and create gaps. Pedal as needed to get into the "Ride Leader Group" and the group will pick up all riders in the Meet-Up as we head towards the Start.

Stick with the ride leader and we'll ride easy to the beginning of the lap (Green Banner). At that point it's time to drop the hammer. Unlike IRL bike racing we will actually ride easy for the neutral start.

Lap Start/Finish: Green Banner. A complete lap = 5.1km. Alternating Hard/Easy. The circuit is pancake flat and should t-up a great sprint.

Monument Avenue Sprint: (0.22km) Ending at 7.6, 17.8 & 22.9km*.

These are the finishes of the "hard" laps.

End of Meet-Up: Green Lap Banner. There will be NO Blue Meet-Up Finish Banner this week (ie. no "race results" to enable "late-join").

*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road. For a fair start we begin with a neutral roll-out and group up from the back. So, please make sure to stick with the ride leader (me) until we reach the Green Lap Banner.

The RC After Party: No messing around. Just a straight up race! There will be no neutral start for this event so make sure your cranks are turning when the meet-up begins. We'll race for 6.3km on Richmond's "Cobbled Climbs". The route begins flat and downhill but finishes on the Libby Hill KOM. This event will preview the finish of next week's Zwift Racing League event and be the last of our Points Classification Contest.

Route details for Richmond's "Cobbled Climbs" are on Zwift Insider here: https://zwiftinsider.com/richmond/

I've recon'd the course for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:

Start: at Km = 0 (No Neutral)

Libby Hill KOM: (0.64km @6.2%) Beginning at 5.6km* This is a difficult climb that really pitches on the switchbacks. Be ready for a big 1.5 minute effort.

Finish: Blue Meet-Up Banner at 6.3km. Use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from Libby Hill KOM Finish Banner.

*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road.

A few reminders so that things go smoothly:

  • Power Ups are fair game!

  • No TT Bikes. If you need to change bikes you can do so in the game by going into your garage and selecting a road bike.

  • Get your warm-up/activation done before the meet-up.

  • Results will show up when you cross the finish and available when viewing your activity in the Companion App.
