Dutchy Estate

Thursday, January 28th at 6:30 & 7:30PM

The Event: The first meet-up, the Royal City Rumble @ 6:30PM, will tour Yorkshire's "Duchy Estate" at high speed. Our second meet-up, the RC After Party @7:30PM, will be a road race-style event that finishes on the short and steep Yorkshire KOM.

The Royal City Rumble: This week's edition will be 7 Laps of Yorkshire's "Duchy Estate" (= 23.0km, including lead in). We'll begin with 2km Neutral Start (see below) to the Green Lap Banner (= start of the Lap). At that point we'll ramp-up the intensity for a hard 3.0km lap finishing back at the Green Lap Banner. Then we'll ride the next complete lap very easy to regroup. We'll alternate Hard/Easy for 7 total laps (completing 4 Hard). As always, all abilities can join just be prepared to go hard!

I've done some recon for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:

Neutral Start: 2.0.km*. The Neutral Meet-Up Start is VERY different than Zwift races. There is no start "corral" like in Zwift races. When the Meet-Up begins we group-up from the back:

  • If you're avatar spawned behind the ride leader (Kyle; identified with the yellow arrow) pedal a bit harder to catch up.

  • If you're avatar spawned ahead of the ride leader you should be coasting or riding at <75W until the ride leader passes you.

  • Mistake: Don't try to catch up with the first rider on the road. That will pull other riders up ahead and create gaps. Pedal as needed to get into the "Ride Leader Group" and the group will pick up all riders in the Meet-Up as we head towards the Start.

Stick with the ride leader and we'll ride easy to the Green Lap Start Banner. At that point it's time to drop the hammer. Unlike IRL bike racing we will actually ride easy (<100 Watts) for the neutral start.

Lap Start/Finish: Green Banner. A complete lap = 3.0km. Alternating Hard/Easy. This is a challenging circuit! We'll begin the lap fast and downhill but finish with an uphill sprint.

Sprint Start: 300m to go. Look for the green markings to indicate the sprint start. Left side of the road in the UK ;)

End of Meet-Up: Blue Banner. On the 7th and final lap use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from the lap finish (= Green Banner).

*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road. For a fair start we begin with a neutral roll-out and group up from the back. So, please make sure to stick with the ride leader (me) until we reach the Lap Start/Finish (= Green Banner).

RC After Party: There will be no neutral start for this event so make sure your cranks are turning when the meet-up begins. We'll race for 9.4km on Yorkshire's "2019 UCI Worlds Harrogate Circuit." Be prepared to finish with a big VO2 intensity effort.

Yorkshire KOM: (1.2km @5.5%) Begins at 8.1km*.

End of Meet-Up: Blue Banner at 9.4km. Use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from the Yorkshire KOM finish (= Red Polka Dot Banner).

A few reminders so that things go smoothly:

  • Power Ups are fair game!

  • No TT Bikes. If you need to change bikes you can do so in the game by going into your garage and selecting a road bike.

  • Get your warm-up/activation done before the meet-up.

  • Results will show up when you cross the finish and available when viewing your activity in the Companion App.
