Cobbled Climbs & Full Gas on The Flats

Thursday, January 7th at 6:30PM & 7:30PM

The Event: The first meet-up, the Royal City Rumble @ 6:30PM, will feature targeted efforts of the short and steep climbs of the 2015 Richmond UCI Worlds Course. Our second meet-up, the RC After Party @7:30PM, will be a road race style event on Richmond's "The Fan Flats." This is definitely a course for the sprinters and, once again, points are up for grabs in our Points Classification Contest (Dec 10 - Feb 11). The RC After Party is a Rouleur Level Members only event.

The Royal City Rumble: We'll complete 2 and 1/2 laps of Richmond's "Cobbled Climbs" (= 25.8km, including lead in). We'll roll-out together as a group for the first 5.6km. The first effort begins at the Libby Hill KOM Start. The effort continues over the top of Libby Hill and ends at the finish banner for the 23rd Street KOM. After the effort we'll regroup and ride easy to complete the loop. We'll start the next effort when we get back to the Libby Hill KOM Start. There will be 3 efforts in total. As always, all abilities can join just be prepared to go hard!

Route details for Richmond's "Cobbled Climbs" are on Zwift Insider here: https://zwiftinsider.com/richmond/

I've recon'd the course for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:

Neutral Start: 5.6km* The Neutral Meet-Up Start is VERY different than Zwift races. There is no start "corral" like in Zwift races. When the Meet-Up begins we group-up from the back:

  • If you're avatar spawned behind the ride leader (Kyle; identified with the yellow arrow) pedal a bit harder to catch up.

  • If you're avatar spawned ahead of the ride leader you should be coasting or riding at <75W until the ride leader passes you.

  • Mistake: Don't try to catch up with the first rider on the road. That will pull other riders up ahead and create gaps. Pedal as needed to get into the "Ride Leader Group" and the group will pick up all riders in the Meet-Up as we head towards the Start.

Stick with the ride leader and we'll ride easy to the beginning of the Libby Hill KOM. At that point it's time to drop the hammer. Unlike IRL bike racing we will actually ride easy for the neutral start.

Effort Start: Libby Hill KOM: (0.64km @6.2%) Beginning at 5.6, 14.8, 24.0km* This is a difficult climb that really pitches on the switchbacks. Be ready for a big 1.5 minute effort. Effort Finish: 23rd Street KOM: (0.28km @10%) Ending at 7.4, 16.6, 25.8km* Very steep! Hit it with speed.

Meet-up Finish: Blue Meet-Up Banner at 25.8km. On the 3rd and final effort use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from 23rd Street KOM Finish Banner.

*Distances are approximate because every rider's avatar will spawn at a slightly different point on the road.

The RC After Party: No messing around. Just a straight up race! There will be no neutral start for this event so make sure your cranks are turning when the meet-up begins. We'll race for 7.6km on Richmond's "The Fan Flats." I've done some recon for the event. See pics and use this info to create your stem guides:

Route: Richmond's "The Fan Flats" https://zwiftinsider.com/richmond/

Start: at Km = 0 (No Neutral)

Finish: Blue Banner at 7.6km. Use the "distance remaining" indicator on the dashboard (blue, bottom right) as the finish is at the Meet-Up Finish (= Blue Banner). This will be very close but slightly different from the Sprint finish (= Green Banner).

A few reminders so that things go smoothly:

  • Power Ups are fair game!

  • No TT Bikes. If you need to change bikes you can do so in the game by going into your garage and selecting a road bike.

  • Get your warm-up/activation done before the meet-up.

  • Results will show up when you cross the finish and available when viewing your activity in the Companion App.
